The IRS will soon begin to send out the 2023 Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) filing information letters. Individuals will only receive an IP PIN letter if they previously received one or requested to participate in the IP PIN program.
Taxpayers can participate in the IP PIN program using the Get an IP PIN tool on the IRS website. This tool will lead the person through a complete identification check to authenticate their identity before providing an IP PIN. Please note that if you enroll in this program, you cannot opt-out.
Upon receipt of this letter in early January, please forward a copy to your tax professional to prevent issues with efiling your tax return in 2023.
