The IRS is warning of a new scam mailing to mislead taxpayers into providing valuable personal information. As we always state, the IRS will not contact you via phone, email, or text without first mailing a letter. Therefore, scammers are now trying to mail a package to taxpayers to gain valuable information. Some of these packages come in a cardboard envelope with an IRS logo and a statement of “in relation to your unclaimed refund” noted on the package.
As with many scams, the package’s letter contains contact information NOT related to the IRS. The letter requests sensitive information from taxpayers, including a copy of their driver’s license, which scammers could use to steal a taxpayer’s identity.
